Built to have a stage area bigger than any other house of entertainment in the country circuit, the Princess’ imposing piano key inspired façade and lavish interior was designed and constructed by vaudeville entrepreneur Mr Marino Lucas of Hobart. Costing under 15,000 pounds in its day and made nearly entirely by local craftsman, aside from the pressed tin ceiling domes of loveliness, the theatre holding 1800 people, boasts a grand stair and separate cloak rooms for gents and ladies!

Acclaimed for its charming interior and auditorium dome, this theatre was the talk of the town when it opened in 1911. Ironically the Princess, built to attract live performances enjoyed in other metropolitan centres of Australia, started its life as a cinema. Conan Doyle’s The Speckled Hen was the opening film and was accompanied by vaudeville acts and the theatre’s 10-piece orchestra.
