Hobart has a unique lost culture which occurred in the late 19th and early 20th century, when many ornate rustic huts were privately built out of local materials on the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mount Wellington on what was then Cascade Brewery land.
These huts were simply built but enthusiastically expanded and embellished from weekend to weekend, and in their surroundings rustic archways, bridges, lookouts, and furniture were added. As might be expected, none remain intact today.
Join Maria and John Grist’s as we journey through the history of these beautiful lost structures, which form a romantic and nearly forgotten part of Hobart’s cultural history. Many of the images used in the presentation are drawn from their private collection of postcards, glass lantern slides, photographs, and glass negatives.
